Mount Isa, a vibrant and progressive city of approximately 20,000 people, is located approximately 1,600 kilometres North West of Brisbane and 900 kilometres west of Townsville.
It is joined to both Townsville and Brisbane by plane (with both QANTAS and Virgin Blue airlines servicing the region), bus, rail and road travel. The city is primarily a mining centre with Mount Isa Mines being one of the prominent employers in the region. Many of the industries operating within the city not only support the mines but also tourism and the cattle industry of the Gulf community producing some of the country’s best beef. But Mount Isa is not just about mining; it is a family friendly city, rich with community pride, a land of opportunity with regard to career, education, and lifestyle.
Located just fifteen kilometres north of Mount Isa is nearby Lake Moondarra, a centre for a variety of aquatic activities that include fishing, water-skiing and canoeing. The Lake is also home to the annual Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic which provides a weekend jam packed with fun and excitement for everyone.
As an educational precinct the city currently has seven State primary schools and two Catholic Primary schools. The region hosts one other High school. Mount Isa is a mining and rural community that can be quite attractive to those who wish to spend some time in rural areas or who may prefer to commence their teaching careers away from the larger urban centres.
